Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 88

Let EE be a vector space of finite dimension nn and AA be a compact convex set in EE. a) Let HH be a hyperplane in EE. Show that in an open half-space determined by HH and containing at least one point of AA, there exists a point of strict convexity of AA (II, p. 87, exerc. 6). (Consider, in HH, a closed euclidean ball CC of dimension n−1n - 1 and of sufficiently large radius that contains H∩AH \cap A, then the euclidean balls BB of dimension nn and of larger radius containing AA and such that B∩H=CB \cap H = C.) b) Show that AA is the closed convex envelope of the set of points of strict convexity (use a)). c) Show that every extremal point of AA is a cluster point of the set of points of AA of strict convexity. (Using b) and the exerc. 9, a) of II, p. 66, note that an extremal point is the limit of a sequence of points of the form ∑i=0nλimxim\sum_{i=0}^n \lambda_{im} x_{im}, where λim≥0\lambda_{im} \geq 0, ∑i=0nλim=1\sum_{i=0}^n \lambda_{im} = 1 and the ximx_{im} are points of strict convexity of AA; next use the compactness of AA.)
