Topological Vector Spaces, III, p. 41

Let EE be a locally convex space, LL a vector subspace of EE of finite codimension, and SS a convex balanced bornivorous set (III, p. 39, exerc. 11) in LL. We shall prove that there exists a convex, balanced and bornivorous set S′S' in EE such that S=S′∩LS = S' \cap L. a) We can reduce to the case where LL is a hyperplane such that E=L⊕RaE = L \oplus \mathbf{R} a for a point a∉La \notin L, and such that there exists a bounded sequence (xn)(x_n) in EE such that if we put xn=λn(yn+a)x_n = \lambda_n (y_n + a) with λn∈R\lambda_n \in \mathbf{R} and yn∈Ly_n \in L, then ∣λn∣|\lambda_n| tends to +∞+\infty; if B0B_0 is the convex balanced envelope of the set consisting of aa and the xnx_n, then we have yn+a∈λn−1B0y_n + a \in \lambda_n^{-1} B_0 for all nn. b) Let B\mathscr{B} be the set of all bounded, convex, balanced subsets of EE which contain B0B_0; by hypothesis, for every B∈BB \in \mathscr{B}, there exists ρB>0\rho_B > 0 such that 2ρBB∩L⊂S2\rho_B B \cap L \subset S. Show that if RR is the convex balanced envelope of the union of the sets ρBB\rho_B B for B∈BB \in \mathscr{B}, then we have** R∩L⊂SR \cap L \subset S.
