Let G be a discrete group. We say that G is a group on which a mean can be defined if there exists a linear form u on ℓR∞(G)\ell^\infty_\mathbf{R}(G) (I, p. 4) such that u(x)≥0u(x) \geq 0 for x≥0x \geq 0, u(1)=1u(1) = 1, and such that u(γ(s)x)=u(x)u(\gamma(s)x) = u(x) for all s∈Gs \in G and all x∈ℓR∞(G)x \in \ell^\infty_\mathbf{R}(G) (where (γ(s)x)(t)=x(s−1t)(\gamma(s)x)(t) = x(s^{-1}t) for all t∈Gt \in G) (invariance under left translations). a) If we put x~=x(t−1)\tilde{x} = x(t^{-1}) for x∈ℓR∞(G)x \in \ell^\infty_\mathbf{R}(G) and t∈Gt \in G, and if the linear form u is invariant under left translations, then the linear form v:x↦u(x~)v : x \mapsto u(\tilde{x}) is invariant under right translations, in other words v(δ(s)x)=v(x)v(\delta(s)x) = v(x) for all s∈Gs \in G and for all x∈ℓR∞(G)x \in \ell^\infty_\mathbf{R}(G) (where (δ(s)x)(t)=x(ts)(\delta(s)x)(t) = x(ts) for all t∈Gt \in G). Put Fx(s)=u(δ(s)x)F_x(s) = u(\delta(s)x) for s∈Gs \in G and x∈ℓR∞(G)x \in \ell^\infty_\mathbf{R}(G), then Fγ(t)x(s)=Fx(s)F_{\gamma(t)x}(s) = F_x(s) and Fδ(t)x(s)=Fx(st)F_{\delta(t)x}(s) = F_x(st) for all t∈Gt \in G; deduce that the linear form w on ℓR∞(G)\ell^\infty_\mathbf{R}(G) defined by w(x)=v(Fx)w(x) = v(F_x) is invariant under left and right translations, and is such that w(x)≥0w(x) \geq 0 for x≥0x \geq 0 and w(1)=1w(1) = 1. \* b) Let K be a non-empty compact space and Γ\Gamma a subgroup of the group of all homeomorphisms from K onto itself. Show that if a mean can be defined on Γ\Gamma, then there exists a measure μ≥0\mu \geq 0 on K of mass 1, which is invariant under Γ\Gamma. (If a∈Ka \in K, consider the linear mapping

which associates to each continuous real function ff in KK, the function σ↦f(σ(a))\sigma \mapsto f(\sigma(a)) belonging to ℓR∞(Γ)\ell^\infty_\mathbf{R}(\Gamma).) c) Let EE be a Hausdorff topological vector space over R\mathbf{R}, and KK a non-empty compact convex subset of EE. Let Γ\Gamma be a group of continuous affine transformations from KK onto itself. Show that if a mean can be defined on Γ\Gamma, then there exists a point b∈Kb \in K such that σ(b)=b\sigma(b) = b for all σ∈Γ\sigma \in \Gamma. (Use bb and consider the barycenter of μ\mu.) d) Show that a mean can be defined on a discrete group GG if and only if there exists a non null measure μ\mu which is invariant under GG, on every non-empty compact space KK on which GG operates continuously. (If E=K(G)‾E = \overline{\mathscr{K}(G)}, consider the unit ball BB in E′=ℓR1(G)E' = \ell^1_\mathbf{R}(G), endowed with σ(E′,E)\sigma(E', E), and associate to each element x∈ℓR∞(G)=E′′x \in \ell^\infty_\mathbf{R}(G) = E'' its restriction to BB.) If GG is countable, it is enough that the above property holds for every compact metrizable KK. \*
