Topological Vector Spaces, IV, p. 74

It is set in small type as supplementary.

a) Let B\mathfrak{B} be the set of bounded subsets of the plane R2\mathbf{R}^2 and let Γ\Gamma be the group of displacements of R2\mathbf{R}^2; let CC be the square [0,1]×[0,1][0, 1] \times [0, 1]. Show that there exists a positive additive set function λ\lambda defined on B\mathfrak{B}, which is invariant under Γ\Gamma and is such that λ(C)=1\lambda(C) = 1 (apply exerc. 6 to the case where gg is the characteristic function of CC; observe that Γ\Gamma is solvable, hence has an invariant mean (IV, p. 41, corollary)). If AA is a bounded subset of R2\mathbf{R}^2, whose boundary is negligible for the Lebesgue measure μ\mu on R2\mathbf{R}^2, then λ(A)=μ(A)\lambda(A) = \mu(A) (for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0, there exists two sets A1A_1 and A2A_2 such that A1⊂A⊂A2A_1 \subset A \subset A_2, μ(A2−A1)<ε\mu(A_2 - A_1) < \varepsilon, and A1A_1 and A2A_2 are unions of a finite number of squares). b) Consider the same question as in a), taking for B\mathfrak{B} the set of all subsets of R2\mathbf{R}^2, for Γ\Gamma the group of similarity transformations and C=R2C = \mathbf{R}^2.
