Topological Vector Spaces, IV, p. 49

Let EE be a locally convex Hausdorff space, E′E' its dual, S\mathscr{S} a covering of EE consisting of bounded subsets; we assign the S\mathscr{S}-topology to E′E'. Show that, for the bilinear form (x,x′)↦⟨x,x′⟩(x, x') \mapsto \langle x, x' \rangle to be continuous on E×E′E \times E', it is necessary and sufficient that the topology of EE can be defined by a single norm, and that the S\mathscr{S}-topology is the strong topology on E′E' (\emph{cf.} III, p. 37, exerc. 2).
