Topological Vector Spaces, IV, p. 57
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let E be a Banach space satisfying the first axiom of countability. Show that the following properties are equivalent : a) E is not reflexive. b) For every number θ such that 0<θ<1, there exists a sequence (xn′) in E′ such that, ∥xn′∥≤1 for all n, that the sequence (xn′) converges to 0 for σ(E′,E) and that the distance of 0 from the convex set generated by the xn′ is ≥θ. c) For every number θ such that 0<θ<1 and every sequence λn of numbers >0 such that ∑nλn=1, there exists a number α such that θ≤α≤1 and a sequence (yn′) of points of E′ such that ∥yn′∥≤1 for all n, ∥∑nλnyn′∥=α and ∥∑k=1nλkyk′∥≤α(1−θ∑j=n+1∞λj) for all n. d) There exists z′∈E′ such that for no x∈E do we have ∣⟨x,z′⟩∣=∥x∥⋅∥z′∥ (Theorem of James-Klee). (To see that a) implies b), observe that there exists z′′∈E′′ such that ∥z′′∥<1 and d(z′′,E)>θ. If (xn) is an everywhere dense sequence in E, find the sequence (xn′) in E′ such that ∥xn′∥<1 and such that ⟨xk,xn′⟩=0 for k≤n and ⟨xn′,z′′⟩=θ. To see that b) implies c), use exerc. 24. For c) implies d), show that for all x∈E we have ∣∑nλn⟨x,yn′⟩∣<α, with the notations of c).
