Exercise 12, § 1

Topological Vector Spaces, V, p. 63

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Show that there exists a number c0>0c_0 > 0 such that, for every real normed vector space E of dimension nn and every integer k≤c0nk \leq c_0 n, there exists a hilbertian norm x↦∥x∥2x \mapsto \|x\|_2 on E such that ∥x∥2≤∥x∥\|x\|_2 \leq \|x\| for all x∈Ex \in E, as well as an orthonormal system (xj)1≤j≤k(x_j)_{1 \leq j \leq k} of kk elements of E (for the hilbertian structure) with norms ∥xj∥≤2\|x_j\| \leq 2. (Use exerc. 3 of V, p. 60.) b) Let n,mn, m be two integers >0> 0 such that n≤c0mn \leq c_0 m. Let E be a real normed vector space of dimension mm. Show that there exists a vector subspace F of E, of dimension nn, a positive and separating symmetric bilinear form (x,y)↦⟨x∣y⟩(x, y) \mapsto \langle x|y \rangle on F and an orthonormal basis {a1,a2,...,an}\{a_1, a_2, ..., a_n\} of F such that

12sup⁡j∣⟨aj∣x⟩∣≤∥x∥≤∥x∥2 \frac{1}{2} \sup_j |\langle a_j|x \rangle| \leq \|x\| \leq \|x\|_2
(where ∥x∥22=⟨x∣x⟩\|x\|_2^2 = \langle x|x \rangle) for all x∈Fx \in F. (Apply a) to the dual E′E' of E.)
