Exercise 14, § 1

Topological Vector Spaces, V, p. 63

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let E be an infinite dimensional Banach space. a) Show that for every integer N, there exists a sequence (bj)1≤j≤N(b_j)_{1 \leq j \leq N} of N vectors in E, of norm 1, such that, for every sequence (ξj)1≤j≤N(\xi_j)_{1 \leq j \leq N} of N scalars, we have

∥∑j=1Nξjbj∥2≤4∑j=1N∣ξj∣2 \left\| \sum_{j=1}^N \xi_j b_j \right\|^2 \leq 4 \sum_{j=1}^N |\xi_j|^2
(use exerc. 12, b)). b) For every sequence (λn)n≥1(\lambda_n)_{n \geq 1} of numbers ≥0\geq 0 such that ∑λn2<+∞\sum \lambda_n^2 < +\infty, show that there exists a sequence (xn)n≥1(x_n)_{n \geq 1} of points of E such that ∥xn∥=λn\|x_n\| = \lambda_n for all nn, and that the series (xn)(x_n) is summable. (Use a) of exerc. 13, a). c) Deduce from b) that in every infinite dimensional Banach space, there exists a commutatively convergent series, that is not absolutely convergent (Dvoretzky-Rogers th.).
