Let EE be a real finite dimensional vector space, and ϕ\phi be a bijective linear mapping from EE onto its dual E∗E^*. Let AA be a symmetric compact convex set in EE, with 0 as an interior point; assume that for every xx in the boundary of AA, the hyperplane with equation ⟨y−x,ϕ(x)⟩=0\langle y - x, \phi(x) \rangle = 0 is a support hyperplane for AA. a) Let f(x)=∣⟨x,ϕ(x)⟩∣f(x) = |\langle x, \phi(x) \rangle|, and let aa be a boundary point of AA where f(x)f(x) attains its minimum. Show that for every point bb such that ⟨b,ϕ(a)⟩=0\langle b, \phi(a) \rangle = 0, we also have ⟨a,ϕ(b)⟩=0\langle a, \phi(b) \rangle = 0. (Observe that ⟨x,ϕ(x)⟩≠0\langle x, \phi(x) \rangle \neq 0 for x≠0x \neq 0, and so we can assume that f(x)=⟨x,ϕ(x)⟩≥0f(x) = \langle x, \phi(x) \rangle \geq 0; use the fact that every support hyperplane of AA at the point aa is also a support hyperplane of the set defined by f(x)≤f(a)f(x) \leq f(a).) b) Show that (x,y)↦⟨x,ϕ(y)⟩(x, y) \mapsto \langle x, \phi(y) \rangle is a symmetric bilinear form, and that AA is identical with the set of all points xx such that f(x)≤γf(x) \leq \gamma for a suitable constant γ\gamma. (Argue by induction on the dimension of EE; with the notations of aa, consider the hyperplane with the equation ⟨x,ϕ(a)⟩=0\langle x, \phi(a) \rangle = 0.)
