Exercise 12, § 4

Topological Vector Spaces, V, p. 78

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let EE be a real hilbertian space and VV be a closed convex cone in EE, with vertex 0, let V∘V^\circ be the polar cone of VV (in EE, identified canonically with its dual). a) Show that every point x∈Ex \in E can be written uniquely in the form x=x+−x−x = x_+ - x_- where x+∈Vx_+ \in V and x−∈V∘x_- \in V^\circ, and ⟨x+∣x−⟩=0\langle x_+|x_- \rangle = 0. b) For every facet FF of VV (II, p. 87, exerc. 3), FF is either the point 0 or is a convex cone with vertex 0 ; the set of all y∈V∘y \in V^\circ which are orthogonal to FF is a closed facet F′F' of V∘V^\circ (but this is not the « dual facet » of FF in the sense of II, p. 87, exerc. 6, the latter being empty). c) Take for EE the set of all Hilbert-Schmidt endomorphisms of a real hilbertian space, and for VV the set of positive elements in EE. Show that we have V∘=VV^\circ = V and in this case interpret the result of aa (to see that V⊂V∘V \subset V^\circ, use cor. 1 of V, p. 56). d) Under the hypothesis of cc, let v∈Vv \in V; the set LL of all x∈Hx \in H such that ⟨v(x)∣x⟩=0\langle v(x)|x \rangle = 0, or, which is the same, such that v(x)=0v(x) = 0 (V, p. 77, exerc. 10) is a closed vector subspace of HH, and the facet FF of vv in VV is the closed set of all u∈Vu \in V such that u(x)=0u(x) = 0 for all x∈Lx \in L; it can be identified with the cone of all positive Hilbert-Schmidt endomorphisms of the hilbertian space L∘L^\circ. Deduce that the projection from EE onto the convex set FF (V, p. 11) is identical with the orthogonal projector from EE onto the closed vector subspace of EE generated by FF.
