Exercise 2, § 3

Functions of a Real Variable, I, 39

With the notation of prop. 2 of I, p. 28 suppose that the relation [a.y]=0[\mathbf{a}.y] = 0 for all y∈Fy \in F implies that a=0\mathbf{a} = 0 in E. Under these conditions, if gig_i (0≤i≤n0 \leq i \leq n) are n+1n + 1 vector functions with values in E, defined on an interval I of R\mathbf{R} and such that for every vector function f\mathbf{f} with values in F and nn times differentiable on I, one has identically

[g0.f]+[g1.f′]+⋯+[gn.f(n)]=0 [g_0.\mathbf{f}] + [g_1.\mathbf{f}'] + \cdots + [g_n.\mathbf{f}^{(n)}] = 0

then the functions gig_i are identically zero.
