Exercise 19, § 4

Functions of a Real Variable, I, 48

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let ff and gg be two finite real functions, ff being defined and continuous on an interval II, and gg defined and continuous on R\mathbf{R}. Suppose that for every pair (λ,μ)(\lambda, \mu) of real numbers the function g(f(x)+λx+μ)g(f(x) + \lambda x + \mu) is convex on II. a) Show that gg is convex and monotone on R\mathbf{R}. b) If gg is increasing (resp. decreasing) on R\mathbf{R}, show that ff is convex (resp. concave) on II (use prop. 7).
