Exercise 20, § 4

Functions of a Real Variable, I, 48

Show that the set K\mathscr{K} of convex functions on an interval I≠RI \neq \mathbf{R} is reticulated for the order " f(x)≤g(x)f(x) \leq g(x) for every x∈Ix \in I" (Set Theory, III, p. 146). Give an example of two convex functions f,gf, g on II such that their infimum in K\mathscr{K} takes a value different from inf⁡(f(x),g(x))\inf(f(x), g(x)) at certain points. Give an example of an infinite family (fα)(f_\alpha) of functions in K\mathscr{K} such that inf⁡αfα(x)\inf_{\alpha} f_\alpha(x) is finite at every point x∈Ix \in I and yet there is no function in K\mathscr{K} less than all the fαf_\alpha.
