Functions of a Real Variable, I, 48

Let f1,…,fnf_1, \ldots, f_n be continuous convex functions on a compact interval I⊂RI \subset \mathbf{R}; suppose that for all x∈Ix \in I one has sup⁡(fj(x))≥0\sup(f_j(x)) \geq 0. Show that there exist nn numbers αj≥0\alpha_j \geq 0 such that ∑j=1nαj=1\sum_{j=1}^n \alpha_j = 1 and that ∑j=1nαjfj(x)≥0\sum_{j=1}^n \alpha_j f_j(x) \geq 0 on II. (First treat the case n=2n = 2, considering a point x0x_0 where the upper envelope sup⁡(f1,f2)\sup(f_1, f_2) attains its minimum, when x0x_0 is interior to II determine α1\alpha_1 so that the left derivative of α1f1+(1−α1)f2\alpha_1 f_1 + (1 - \alpha_1) f_2 is zero at x0x_0. Pass to the general case by induction on nn; use the induction hypothesis for the restrictions of f1,…,fn−1f_1, \ldots, f_{n-1} to the compact interval where fn(x)≤0f_n(x) \leq 0.)
