Functions of a Real Variable, I, 48

Let P(x)P(x) be a polynomial of degree nn with real coefficients all of whose roots are real and contained in the interval [−1,1][-1, 1]. Let kk be an integer such that 1≤k≤n1 \leq k \leq n. Show that the rational function

f(x)=x+P(k−1)(x)P(k)(x) f(x) = x + \frac{P^{(k-1)}(x)}{P^{(k)}(x)}
is increasing on every interval of R\mathbf{R} on which it is defined: if c1<c2<⋯<crc_1 < c_2 < \cdots < c_r are its poles (contained in [−1,1][-1, 1]), then ff is convex for x<c1x < c_1 and concave for x>crx > c_r. Deduce that when aa runs through [−1,1][-1, 1] the length of the largest interval containing the zeros of the kthk^{th} derivative of (x−a)P(x)(x-a)P(x) attains its largest value when a=1a = 1 or a=−1a = -1.
