Exercise 9, § 4

Functions of a Real Variable, I, 46

Let ff be a finite real function, lower semi-continuous on an interval I⊂RI \subset \mathbf{R}. For ff to be convex on II it suffices that, for every pair of points a,ba, b of II such that a<ba < b there exists one point zz such that a<z<ba < z < b, and that MzM_z be below the segment MaMbM_aM_b (argue by contradiction, noting that the set of points xx such that MxM_x lies strictly above MaMbM_aM_b is open).
