Exercise 1, § 1
Functions of a Real Variable, II, 79
Let be a set of real functions, defined on an interval , each admitting a strict primitive on , and forming a directed set for the relation . Let be the upper envelope of the family ; suppose that admits a strict primitive on . Show that if (resp. ) is the primitive of (resp. ) which vanishes at a point , then is the upper envelope of the family on the intersection and its lower envelope on the intersection . (Restricting to the first of these intervals, show that if is the upper envelope of on then one has for ; then prove that, for all , one has , and conclude from this last inequality that ; deduce the proposition from this.)
Give an example of an increasing sequence of continuous functions on an interval which are uniformly bounded, but whose upper envelope does not admit a strict primitive on .
