Exercise 19, § 1

Functions of a Real Variable, II, 83

Let ff be a convex function on an interval II, let hh be a number >0> 0, and IhI_h the intersection of II and the intervals I+hI + h and I−hI - h; show that, if IhI_h is not empty, the function

gh(x)=12h∫x−hx+hf(t) dt g_h(x) = \frac{1}{2h} \int_{x-h}^{x+h} f(t)\,dt
is convex on IhI_h; if h<kh < k one has gh≤gkg_h \leq g_k. When hh tends to 0 show that ghg_h tends uniformly to ff on every compact interval contained in the interior of II.
