Functions of a Real Variable, II, 83

Let ff be a continuous increasing real function and ≥0\geq 0 on the interval [0,1][0, 1] a) Show that there exists a convex function g≥0g \geq 0 on [0,1][0, 1] such that g≤fg \leq f and ∫01g(t) dt≥12∫01f(t) dt\int_0^1 g(t)\,dt \geq \frac{1}{2} \int_0^1 f(t)\,dt (cf. I, p. 48, exerc. 23). b) Show that there exists a convex function hh on [0,1][0, 1] such that h≥fh \geq f and that

∫01h(t) dt≤2∫01f(t) dt. \int_0^1 h(t)\,dt \leq 2 \int_0^1 f(t)\,dt.
(For every aa such that 0<a≤10 < a \leq 1, let faf_a be the function equal to ff for 0≤t≤a0 \leq t \leq a and to f(a)f(a) for a≤t≤1a \leq t \leq 1; let AA be the set of a∈]0,1]a \in ]0, 1] for which there exists a convex function hah_a on [0,1][0, 1] such that ha≥fah_a \geq f_a and ∫01ha(t) dt≤2∫01fa(t) dt\int_0^1 h_a(t)\,dt \leq 2 \int_0^1 f_a(t)\,dt. Show that the least upper bound bb of AA again belongs to AA, using exerc. 1 of I, p. 45. Then prove that f_b = f, arguing by contradiction. For this, reduce to proving the following result: if φ\varphi is continuous and increasing on [0,1][0, 1], not constant, and such that φ(0)=0\varphi(0) = 0. then there is a point c∈]0,1[c \in ]0, 1[ such that φ(c)>0\varphi(c) > 0 and such that the linear function ψ\psi such that ψ(c)=φ(c)\psi(c) = \varphi(c) and
ψ(2c−1)=0 \psi(2c - 1) = 0
satisfies the relation ψ(t)≥φ(t)\psi(t) \geq \varphi(t) for max⁡(0,2c−1)≤t≤c.\max(0, 2c - 1) \leq t \leq c.
