Functions of a Real Variable, II, 79

Let ff be a vector function defined on a compact interval I=[a,b]⊂RI = [a, b] \subset \mathbf{R}, taking its values in a complete normed space EE; one says that ff is of bounded variation on II if there exists a number m>0m > 0 such that, for every finite strictly increasing sequence (xi)0≤i≤n(x_i)_{0 \leq i \leq n} of points of II such that x0=ax_0 = a and xn=bx_n = b, one has

∑i=0n−1∥f(xi+1)−f(xi)∥≤m. \sum_{i=0}^{n-1} \|f(x_{i+1}) - f(x_i)\| \leq m.

a) Show that f(I)f(I) is relatively compact in EE (argue by contradiction).

b) Show that ff is regulated on II (prove that when xx tends to a point x0∈Ix_0 \in I, remaining >x0> x_0, the function ff cannot have two different cluster points, and use aa).
