Exercise 9, § 1

Functions of a Real Variable, II, 80

Let ff be a regulated function on a compact interval I=[a, b]I = [a,\ b]. Show that for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there exists a continuous function gg on II such that ∫ab∥f(t)−g(t)∥dt≤ε\int_a^b \|f(t) - g(t)\| dt \leq \varepsilon (reduce to the case where ff is a step function). Deduce that there exists a polynomial hh (with coefficients in EE) such that ∫ab∥f(t)−h(t)∥dt≤ε\int_a^b \|f(t) - h(t)\| dt \leq \varepsilon.
