Functions of a Real Variable, II, 86

Let ff and gg be two real regulated functions on a compact interval [a,b][a, b], such that ff is decreasing on [a,b][a, b], and 0≤g(t)≤10 \leq g(t) \leq 1. If one puts λ=∫abg(t) dt\lambda = \int_a^b g(t) \, dt, show that one has

∫b−λbf(t) dt<∫abf(t)g(t) dt<∫aa+λf(t) dt \int_{b-\lambda}^b f(t) \, dt < \int_a^b f(t) g(t) \, dt < \int_a^{a+\lambda} f(t) \, dt

except when ff is constant, or gg is equal to 0 (resp. 1) at all the points where it is continuous (in which case all three terms are equal). (Vary one of the limits of integration in the integral ∫1xf(t)g(t) dt\int_1^x f(t)g(t)\,dt.)
