Functions of a Real Variable, II, 87

Let I=[a,b]I = [a, b], A=[c,d]A = [c, d] be two compact intervals on R\mathbf{R}; let ff be a function defined on I×AI \times A, with values in a complete normed space EE over R\mathbf{R}, such that for all α∈A\alpha \in A, the map t↦f(t,α)t \mapsto f(t, \alpha) is regulated on II, that ff is bounded on I×AI \times A, and that the set DD of points of discontinuity of ff in I×AI \times A is met in a finite number of points by each line x=x0x = x_0 and each line α=α0\alpha = \alpha_0 (x0∈I,α0∈Ax_0 \in I, \alpha_0 \in A).

a) Show that the function g(α)=∫abf(t,α) dtg(\alpha) = \int_a^b f(t, \alpha)\,dt is continuous on AA (given α0∈A\alpha_0 \in A and ε>0\varepsilon > 0, show that there is a neighbourhood VV of α0\alpha_0 and a finite number of intervals JkJ_k contained in II with the sum of their lengths ≤ε\leq \varepsilon, such that, if JJ denotes the complement in II of ⋃kJk\bigcup_k J_k, then ff is continuous on J×VJ \times V).

b) Show that the formula for interchanging the order of integration (II, p. 77, formula (15)) is still valid (same method as in aa) ).
