Functions of a Real Variable, IV, 199

a) Let I=]t0−a,t0+a[I = ]t_0 - a, t_0 + a[ be an open interval in R\mathbf{R}, let SS be an open ball with centre x0x_0 and radius rr in EE, and ff a locally Lipschitz function on I×SI \times S. Let (s,z)↦h(s,z)(s, z) \mapsto h(s, z) be a function ≥0\geq 0 defined and continuous for 0≤s≤a0 \leq s \leq a and 0≤z≤r0 \leq z \leq r, such that for every s∈[0,a]s \in [0, a] the map z↦h(s,z)z \mapsto h(s, z) is increasing; suppose that ∥f(t,x)∥≤h(∣t−t0∣,∥x−x0∥)\|f(t, x)\| \leq h(|t - t_0|, \|x - x_0\|) on I×SI \times S. Let φ\varphi be a primitive of a regulated function on an interval [0,α][0, \alpha] (with α<a\alpha < a), with values in [0,r[[0, r[, such that φ(0)=0\varphi(0) = 0 and φ′(s)>h(s,φ(s))\varphi'(s) > h(s, \varphi(s)) on [0,α][0, \alpha] except on a countable set. Show that the integral uu of x′=f(t,x)x' = f(t, x), equal to x0x_0 at the point t0t_0, is defined on ]t0−α,t0+α[]t_0 - \alpha, t_0 + \alpha[, and that ∥u(t)−x0∥≤φ(∣t−t0∣)\|u(t) - x_0\| \leq \varphi(|t - t_0|) on this interval.

b) Deduce from a) that if ff is defined on I×EI \times E, and there is a function hh defined, continuous, increasing and >0> 0 on [0,+∞[[0, +\infty[, such that ∫0+∞dz/h(z)=+∞\int_0^{+\infty} dz/h(z) = +\infty, and that ∥f(t,x)∥≤h(∥x∥)\|f(t, x)\| \leq h(\|x\|), then every integral of x′=f(t,x)x' = f(t, x) is defined on all of II.
