Exercise 5, § 1

Functions of a Real Variable, IV, 200

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let EE be the complete normed space of sequences x=(xn)x = (x_n) of real numbers such that lim⁡n→∞xn=0\lim_{n \to \infty} x_n = 0, normed by ∥x∥=sup⁡n∣xn∣\|x\| = \sup_n |x_n|. For every integer n≥0n \geq 0 let ene_n be the sequence every term of which is zero, apart from the term with index nn, which is equal to 1; the space EE is the direct sum of the subspace VnV_n of dimension 2 generated by ene_n and en+1e_{n+1}, and the closed subspace WnW_n generated by the eke_k with indices different from nn and n+1n+1. Let fnf_n be a continuous Lipschitz function on EE, with values in EE, constant on every equivalence class modulo WnW_n, equal to en+1−ene_{n+1} - e_n on the line joining ene_n to en+1e_{n+1}, and equal to 0 on the intersection of VnV_n and the ball ∥x∥≤14\|x\| \leq \frac{1}{4}. On the other hand, for every integer n>0n > 0 let φn\varphi_n be a real function defined and continuous on the interval [1n+1,1n]\left[ \frac{1}{n+1}, \frac{1}{n} \right], equal to 0 at the endpoints of this interval, and such that ∫1/(n+1)1/nφn(t)dt=1\int_{1/(n+1)}^{1/n} \varphi_n(t) dt = 1. Let II be the interval [0,1][0, 1] in R\mathbf{R}; consider on I×EI \times E the function ff with values in EE, defined as follows: f(0,x)=0f(0, x) = 0 for every x∈Ex \in E; for 1n+1≤t≤1n\frac{1}{n+1} \leq t \leq \frac{1}{n}, let f(t,x)=φn(t)fn(x)f(t, x) = \varphi_n(t)f_n(x). Show that ff is continuous and locally Lipschitz on I×EI \times E, but that there exists an integral uu of the equation x′=f(t,x)x' = f(t, x), defined and bounded on [0,1][0, 1], equal to ene_n for t=1/nt = 1/n, and consequently having no limit as tt tends to 0.
