Exercise 5, § 2

Functions of a Real Variable, IV, 204

Show by an example that a linear equation dx/dt=A.x+eαtp(t)d\mathbf{x}/dt = A.\mathbf{x} + e^{\alpha t}\mathbf{p}(t), where A∈L(E)A \in \mathscr{L}(E) is independent of tt and p\mathbf{p} is a polynomial (with coefficients in E) can have an integral which is equal to a polynomial of the same degree as p\mathbf{p}, even when α\alpha is a characteristic root of AA.
