Functions of a Real Variable, IV, 205
a) Let be a map from an interval into , such that, for every , the map of into is continuous. Show that is bounded on every compact interval (use Gen. Top., IX, p. 194, th. 2). Under these conditions show that, for every point the equation has one and only one solution defined on and equal to at the point . Further, if one denotes this solution by , the map is a bijective bicontinuous linear map of onto itself, which satisfies the relations (6) (IV, p. 179) and (7) (IV, p. 181); further, the map is continuous from into .
b) Take for the space of sequences of real numbers such that , endowed with the norm , under which is complete. For each , let be the linear map of into itself such that
Show that satisfies the conditions of a) but that the map of into is not continuous at the point , and that the resolvent of the equation is such that the map of into is not differentiable at the point .
