Functions of a Real Variable, IV, 206

Let yky_k (1≤k≤n1 \leq k \leq n) be nn real functions defined on an interval I⊂RI \subset \mathbf{R} and having a continuous (n−1)th(n-1)^{th} derivative.

a) Show that if the nn functions yky_k are linearly dependent then the matrix (yk(h)(t))0≤h≤n−11≤k≤n(y_k^{(h)}(t))_{0 \leq h \leq n-1 \atop 1 \leq k \leq n} has rank <n< n at every point t∈It \in I.

b) Conversely, if for every t∈It \in I the matrix (yk(h)(t))0≤h≤n−11≤k≤n(y_k^{(h)}(t))_{0 \leq h \leq n-1 \atop 1 \leq k \leq n} has rank <n< n, show that in every nonempty open interval J⊂IJ \subset I there exists a nonempty open interval U⊂JU \subset J such that the restrictions of the yky_k to UU are linearly dependent (if pp is the smallest of the numbers q<nq < n such that the Wronskians of any qq of the functions yky_k are identically zero on JJ, consider a point a∈Ja \in J where the Wronskian of p−1p-1 of the functions yky_k is not zero, and show that pp of the functions yky_k are integrals of a linear equation of order p−1p-1 on a neighbourhood of aa).

c) Put y1(t)=t2y_1(t) = t^2 for t∈Rt \in \mathbf{R}, y2(t)=t2y_2(t) = t^2 for t≥0t \geq 0, y2(t)=−t2y_2(t) = -t^2 for t<0t < 0; show that y1y_1 and y2y_2 have continuous derivatives on R\mathbf{R} and that y1y2′−y2y1′=0y_1 y_2' - y_2 y_1' = 0, but that y1y_1 and y2y_2 are not linearly dependent on R\mathbf{R}.
