Functions of a Real Variable, V, 264

Let K\mathscr{K} be a Hardy field such that, for every function f∈Kf \in \mathscr{K} not equivalent to a constant, and of order 0 relative to lm−1(x)l_{m-1}(x), there exist a constant kk and a rational integer rr such that f(x)∼k(lm(x))rf(x) \sim k(l_m(x))^r.

a) Let zz be any function in K\mathscr{K}, not identically zero on a neighbourhood of +∞+\infty. Show that every function gg in the Hardy field K(log⁡∣z∣)\mathscr{K}(\log |z|) not equivalent to a constant, and of order 0 relative to lm(x)l_m(x), is equivalent to a function of the form k(lm+1(x))rk(l_{m+1}(x))^r (kk constant, rr a rational integer). (First consider the case where gg is a polynomial of degree pp in log⁡∣z∣\log |z|, with coefficients in K\mathscr{K}, and argue by induction on pp, using exerc. 3; if gg is a rational function of log⁡∣z∣\log |z|, with coefficients in K\mathscr{K}, argue by induction on the degree of the numerator, using exerc. 3.)

b) Show that every function in K(lm+1(x))\mathscr{K}(l_{m+1}(x)) is equivalent to a function of the form f(x)(lm+1(x))rf(x)(l_{m+1}(x))^r where f∈Kf \in \mathscr{K} and rr is a rational integer.

c) Let zz be any function in K\mathscr{K}. Show that every function gg of the Hardy field K(ez)\mathscr{K}(e^z) of order 0 relative to lm(x)l_m(x) is equivalent to a constant. (First consider the case where g=uqP(u)g = u^q P(u), where u=ezu = e^z, qq is a rational integer, and P(u)P(u) is a polynomial in uu, of degree pp, with coefficients in K\mathscr{K}; then argue by induction on pp, using aa) and exerc. 3 Pass from there to the general case by using exerc. 3.)

d) Extend the result of a) to the field K(u1,u2,…,us)\mathscr{K}(u_1, u_2, \ldots, u_s), where the uku_k are of the form ezke^{z_k} or log⁡∣zk∣\log |z_k|, the zkz_k being functions in K\mathscr{K} not identically zero on a neighbourhood of +∞+\infty (argue by induction on ss).
