Functions of a Real Variable, V, 265

a) Let (fn)(f_n) be a sequence of increasing continuous functions belonging to H(F,R)\mathscr{H}(\mathfrak{F}, \mathbf{R}) and such that fn≪fn+1f_n \ll f_{n+1} for every nn. Show that there exists a function ff that is continuous, increasing, belongs to H(F,R)\mathscr{H}(\mathfrak{F}, \mathbf{R}), and is such that f≫fnf \gg f_n for every nn (reduce to the case where fn≤fn+1f_n \leq f_{n+1} and define ff so that fn(x)≤f(x)≤fn+1(x)f_n(x) \leq f(x) \leq f_{n+1}(x) for n≤x≤n+1n \leq x \leq n+1).

b) Let (fn)(f_n) be a sequence of increasing continuous functions belonging to H(F,R)\mathscr{H}(\mathfrak{F}, \mathbf{R}) and such that 1≪fn+1≪fn1 \ll f_{n+1} \ll f_n for every nn. Show that there exists a function ff that is continuous, increasing, belongs to H(F,R)\mathscr{H}(\mathfrak{F}, \mathbf{R}), and is such that 1≪f≪fn1 \ll f \ll f_n for every nn (reduce to the case where fn+1≤fnf_{n+1} \leq f_n and show that one can define an increasing sequence (xn)(x_n) of real numbers and a continuous increasing function ff such that fn+1(x)≤f(x)≤fn(x)f_{n+1}(x) \leq f(x) \leq f_n(x) for xn≤x≤xn+1x_n \leq x \leq x_{n+1}).

c) Let (fn),(gn)(f_n), (g_n) be two sequences of continuous increasing functions belonging to H(F,R)\mathscr{H}(\mathfrak{F}, \mathbf{R}) such that fn≪fn+1,gm≫gm+1f_n \ll f_{n+1}, g_m \gg g_{m+1} and fn≪gmf_n \ll g_m for all mm and nn; show that there exists a function hh, continuous, increasing, belonging to H(F,R)\mathscr{H}(\mathfrak{F}, \mathbf{R}), such that fn≪h≪gmf_n \ll h \ll g_m for all mm and nn (similar method).

In particular, show that there exists a continuous decreasing function ff in H(F,R)\mathscr{H}(\mathfrak{F}, \mathbf{R}) such that no logarithmic criterion allows one to determine whether the integral ∫a+∞f(t) dt\int_a^{+\infty} f(t)\,dt converges or is infinite ("*theorems of Du Bois-Reymond*"").
