Exercise 2, § 1

Functions of a Real Variable, V

Let φ\varphi be a strictly positive function, defined and increasing for x>0x > 0, and such that φ≫1\varphi \gg 1.

a) Show that if the function log⁡φ(x)/log⁡x\log \varphi(x)/\log x is increasing, then the relation f≪gf \ll g between functions >0> 0 implies that φ∘f≪φ∘g\varphi \circ f \ll \varphi \circ g if g≫1g \gg 1.

b) Give an example where log⁡φ(x)/log⁡x\log \varphi(x)/\log x is decreasing, ff and gg are two functions >0> 0 such that g≫1g \gg 1 and f∼gf \sim g, but φ∘f\varphi \circ f is not equivalent to φ∘g\varphi \circ g.
