Exercise 5, § 2

Functions of a Real Variable, VI, 293

If one puts Sn(x)=1n+1(Bn−1(x)−Bn+1(0))S_n(x) = \frac{1}{n+1} (B_{n-1}(x) - B_{n+1}(0)) then, for every integer a>0a > 0 one has

Sn(a)=1n+2n+⋯+(a−1)n. S_n(a) = 1^n + 2^n + \cdots + (a-1)^n.

a) Show that for every integer n≥0n \geq 0 and every integer a>0a > 0 one has 2S2n+1(a)≡02 S_{2n+1}(a) \equiv 0 (mod. aa) (consider the sum k2n+1+(a−k)2n+1k^{2n+1} + (a-k)^{2n+1}).

b) If rr and ss are any two integers show that

Sn(rs)≡sSn(r)+nrSn−1(r)S1(s)(modr2). S_n(rs) \equiv s S_n(r) + n r S_{n-1}(r) S_1(s) \pmod{r^2}.

c) Let pp be a prime number. Show that if nn is divisible by p−1p-1 one has Sn(p)≡−1S_n(p) \equiv -1 (mod. pp), and if nn is not divisible by p−1p-1 then Sn(p)≡0S_n(p) \equiv 0 (mod. pp) (if pp does not divide the integer gg remark that Sn(p)≡gnSn(p)S_n(p) \equiv g^n S_n(p) (mod. pp)).
