Exercise 12, § 1

Integration, II, p. 17

Let E be a fully lattice-ordered space. Show that there exists a family (uι)(u_\iota) of elements >0> 0 of E such that uιu_\iota and uκu_\kappa are alien for every pair of distinct indices ι,κ\iota, \kappa, and such that for every x>0x > 0 in E there exists at least one index ι\iota such that inf⁡(x,uι)>0\inf(x, u_\iota) > 0 (use Zorn’s lemma). From this, deduce that for every x≥0x \geq 0 there exists one and only one family (xι)(x_\iota) of elements ≥0\geq 0 of E such that, for every ι\iota, xιx_\iota belongs to the band BιB_\iota generated by uιu_\iota, and such that x=∑ιxιx = \sum_\iota x_\iota for the order structure of E (take xιx_\iota to be the component of xx in the band BιB_\iota). Conversely, every family (xι)(x_\iota) of elements ⩾0\geqslant 0 of E that is bounded above, such that xι∈Bιx_\iota \in B_\iota for all ι\iota, is summable in E (Exer. 11).
