Exercise 2, § 2

Integration, II, p. 19

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let LL be a positive linear form on the Riesz space E. Consider an element a>0a > 0 of E and the set of positive linear forms M≤LM \leq L such that: 1∘1^\circ M(x)=L(x)M(x) = L(x) for every xx such that 0≤x≤a0 \leq x \leq a; 2∘2^\circ M(x)=0M(x) = 0 for every x≥0x \geq 0 alien to aa. Show that this set of positive linear forms has a largest element LaL_a and that, for every x≥0x \geq 0, La(x)=inf⁡L(y)L_a(x) = \inf L(y), where yy runs over the set of all elements such that 0≤y≤x0 \leq y \leq x and x−yx - y is alien to aa. Show that Lλa=LaL_{\lambda a} = L_a for every scalar λ>0\lambda > 0, and that if aa and bb are alien then La+b≤La+LbL_{a+b} \leq L_a + L_b. If E is fully lattice-ordered, show that if aa and bb are alien in E then La+b=La+LbL_{a+b} = L_a + L_b.

b) Take E to be the Riesz space of continuous real-valued functions on the interval I=[0,1]I = [0, 1] of R\mathbf{R}, and L(x)=x(12)L(x) = x(\frac{1}{2}); show by means of an example that one can have La+b<La+LbL_{a+b} < L_a + L_b for two alien elements a,ba, b of E.
