Exercise 8, § 2

Integration, II, p. 20

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let E be a Riesz space, (Uι)(U_\iota) a family of positive linear forms on E. We consider the topology T\mathscr{T} on E defined by the semi-norms Uι(∣x∣)U_\iota(|x|).

a) Show that the subspace H of E formed by the xx such that Uι(∣x∣)=0U_\iota(|x|) = 0 for all ι\iota is an isolated subspace of E (§1§ 1, Exer. 4); the Hausdorff space associated with E is the quotient space E/HE/H; by passage to the quotient, the UℓU_\ell define positive linear forms U˙ℓ\dot{U}_\ell on E/HE/H, and the quotient topology on E/HE/H is defined by the semi-norms U˙ℓ(∣x∣)\dot{U}_\ell(|x|).

b) Show that in the space EE the mapping x↦∣x∣x \mapsto |x| is uniformly continuous, and deduce therefrom that if the topology T\mathscr{T} is Hausdorff then it is compatible with the ordered vector space structure of EE.

c) Assume that the topology T\mathscr{T} is Hausdorff and that EE is fully lattice-ordered; show that every band BB in EE is closed, and that if B′B' is the band formed by the elements alien to every element of BB, then EE is the topological direct sum of BB and B′B'.

d) Assume that the topology T\mathscr{T} is Hausdorff. Let E^\widehat{E} be the completion of EE; if PP is the set of elements ⩾0\geqslant 0 of EE, show that the closure P‾\overline{P} of PP in E^\widehat{E} defines a Riesz space structure on E^\widehat{E} (cf. §1, No. 2).

e) If EE is Hausdorff and complete for the topology T\mathscr{T}, show that in order for a set A⊂EA \subset E, directed for the relation ⩽\leqslant, to have a supremum in EE, it is necessary and sufficient that, for every index ℓ\ell, Uℓ(x)U_\ell(x) be bounded above in AA; for every continuous, increasing numerical function ff on EE, one then has sup⁡x∈Af(x)=f(sup⁡A)\sup_{x \in A} f(x) = f(\sup A). Deduce from this that EE is fully lattice-ordered.

f) Assume that EE is Hausdorff and complete for the topology T\mathscr{T}. Show that if a filter F\mathfrak{F} on EE has a limit for the order structure of EE (§ 1, Exer. 9), then it converges to the same limit for the topology T\mathscr{T} (make use of e)).
