Exercise 14, § 1

Integration, III, p. 58

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let XX be a locally compact space with a countable base. Show that the space M+(X)\mathscr{M}_+(X), equipped with the vague topology, is metrizable.

b) Let LL be the set of increasing sequences (kn)n∈Z(k_n)_{n \in \mathbf{Z}} of integers ⩾0\geqslant 0, tending to +∞+\infty with nn, and zero for n⩽0n \leqslant 0 except for a finite number of values of nn; let PP be the set of equivalence classes formed by the translates (kn+h)n∈Z(k_{n+h})_{n \in \mathbf{Z}} of a same sequence (kn)n∈Z(k_n)_{n \in \mathbf{Z}} (where hh runs over Z\mathbf{Z}); LL and PP are uncountable. Let XX be the discrete topological sum space of PP and Z\mathbf{Z}; let HH be the set of positive measures on XX defined in the following way: for every α∈P\alpha \in P and every sequence g∈αg \in \alpha, να,g\nu_{\alpha, g} is the measure defined by the mass +1+1 at the point α\alpha, mass 00 at the other points of PP, and mass g(n)g(n) at every point n∈Zn \in \mathbf{Z}; take HH to be the cone generated by the measures να,g\nu_{\alpha, g}. Now let μ\mu be the measure on XX defined by the mass +1+1 at each point of PP and mass 00 at each point of Z\mathbf{Z}. Show that μ\mu is in the vague closure of HH but is not in the vague closure of any vaguely bounded subset of HH. (Make use of the fact that for every mapping ff of Z\mathbf{Z} into N\mathbf{N}, there exists an increasing sequence (kn)∈L(k_n) \in L such that for every h∈Zh \in \mathbf{Z}, lim⁡n→∞kn+h/f(n)=+∞\lim_{n \to \infty} k_{n+h}/f(n) = +\infty.)
