Exercise 3, § 1

Integration, III, p. 56

In the example of Exer. 2, take for Y the discrete space N\mathbf{N}. For every n∈Nn \in \mathbf{N}, let ene_n be the function in K(X;R)\mathscr{K}(X; \mathbf{R}) such that en(n)=1e_n(n) = 1 and en(x)=0e_n(x) = 0 for x≠nx \neq n in X. Show that the set A formed by the functions 0 and en/(n+1)e_n/(n+1) is compact in K(X;R)\mathscr{K}(X; \mathbf{R}), but not strictly compact. If U\mathfrak{U} is the ultrafilter on N\mathbf{N} induced by the filter of neighborhoods of ω\omega in βY=βN\beta Y = \beta \mathbf{N}, show that, with respect to U\mathfrak{U}, the family of positive measures (nεn)(n \varepsilon_n) tends to 0 uniformly in every strictly compact subset of K(X;R)\mathscr{K}(X; \mathbf{R}), but does not tend uniformly to 0 in A.
