Exercise 6, § 1

Integration, III, p. 56

Let μ\mu be a measure on a locally compact space X. Show that ∣μ∣=sup⁡R(αμ)|\mu| = \sup \mathscr{R}(\alpha \mu), where the scalar α\alpha runs over the set of complex numbers of absolute value ≤1\leq 1. (Observe that for every function g∈K(X;C)g \in \mathscr{K}(X; \mathbf{C}) and every ε>0\varepsilon > 0, there exist a finite number of mappings hih_i of X into [0,1][0,1], with compact supports, and scalars αi\alpha_i such that ∥g−∑iαihi∥≤ε\|g - \sum_i \alpha_i h_i\| \leq \varepsilon and ∥∣g∣−∑i∣αi∣hi∥≤ε.\| |g| - \sum_i |\alpha_i| h_i \| \leq \varepsilon .)

Show that also ∣μ∣=sup⁡R(h⋅μ)|\mu| = \sup \mathscr{R}(h \cdot \mu), where hh runs over the set of functions in H(X;C)\mathscr{H}(X; \mathbf{C}) such that ∥h∥≤1\|h\| \leq 1.
