Integration, III, p. 60
a) Let X be the interval [0,1] of R; show that if (ak)1⩽k⩽n is any finite sequence of pairwise distinct elements of X, then the n functions ∣x−ak∣ (1⩽k⩽n) are linearly independent. From this, deduce that the continuous function ∣x−y∣ defined on X×X is not of the form ∑i=1nui(x)vi(y), where the ui and vi are continuous.
b) For every measure μ∈M(X;C), set fμ(y)=∫∣x−y∣ dμ(x). Show that the linear mapping μ↦fμ of M(X;C) into C(X;C) is injective, has for image a dense linear subspace L of C(X;C), and is continuous but not bicontinuous for the normed space topologies on M(X;C) and L. (Observe that L contains the constants and the piecewise linear functions.)
c) Let ui (1⩽i⩽m) be any m functions in C(X;C) and let V be the linear subspace of M(X;C) orthogonal to the ui, which is therefore of codimension ⩽m in M(X;C). Show that if B is the set of measures μ on X such that ∥μ∥⩽1, there exist measures μ∈B and ν∈V such that ∫fμ(y) dν(y) is arbitrarily large (make use of b)). From this, deduce that if B, M(X;C) and M(X×X;C) are equipped with the vague topology, then the mapping (μ,ν)↦μ⊗ν of B×M(X;C) into M(X×X;C) is not continuous.
