Exercise 1, § 1

Integration, IV

Show that if ff and gg are two numerical functions ⩾0\geqslant 0 defined on XX, and μ\mu is a positive measure on XX, then

μ∗(sup⁡(f,g))+μ∗(inf⁡(f,g))≤μ∗(f)+μ∗(g). \mu^*(\sup(f, g)) + \mu^*(\inf(f, g)) \leq \mu^*(f) + \mu^*(g).

From this, deduce that if AA and BB are any subsets of XX, then

μ∗(A∪B)+μ∗(A∩B)≤μ∗(A)+μ∗(B) \mu^*(A \cup B) + \mu^*(A \cap B) \leq \mu^*(A) + \mu^*(B)

(cf. §4, Exer. 8 d)).
