Exercise 4, § 1

Integration, IV

Let XX be a locally compact space, α\alpha a finite numerical function ⩾0\geqslant 0 on XX such that, for every compact subset KK of XX, ∑x∈Kα(x)\sum_{x \in K} \alpha(x) is finite; let μ\mu be the positive measure on XX defined by the masses α(x)\alpha(x) (Ch. III, §1, No. 3, Example I).

a) Show that for every function f⩾0f \geqslant 0, lower semi-continuous on XX, one has μ∗(f)=∑x∈Xα(x)f(x)\mu^*(f) = \sum_{x \in X} \alpha(x)f(x), with the convention that α(x)f(x)=0\alpha(x)f(x) = 0 when α(x)=0\alpha(x) = 0 and f(x)=+∞f(x) = +\infty.

b) Let f⩾0f \geqslant 0 be any numerical function defined on XX. Show that if μ∗(f)<+∞\mu^*(f) < +\infty, then μ∗(f)=∑x∈Xα(x)f(x)\mu^*(f) = \sum_{x \in X} \alpha(x)f(x), with the same convention as in a). (Cf. Exer. 5.)
