a) Let (μn)(\mu_n) be a decreasing sequence of measures ≥0\geq 0 on a locally compact space X, and let μ\mu be the infimum of the sequence in M+(X)\mathscr{M}_+(X). Show that if ff is a function ≥0\geq 0 such that μn∗(f)<+∞\mu_n^*(f) < +\infty from some index onward, then μ∗(f)=inf⁡nμn∗(f)\mu^*(f) = \inf_n \mu_n^*(f) (when gg is lower semi-continuous, positive, and satisfies μ∗(g)<+∞\mu^*(g) < +\infty, note that there exists a sequence (hm)(h_m) of continuous functions ⩾0\geqslant 0 with compact support, such that

∑m=1∞hm⩽gandμn∗(g)=∑m=1∞μn∗(hm)for every index n). \sum_{m=1}^{\infty} h_m \leqslant g \quad \text{and} \quad \mu_n^*(g) = \sum_{m=1}^{\infty} \mu_n^*(h_m) \quad \text{for every index } n ).
b) On the discrete space X=NX = \mathbf{N}, let μn\mu_n be the measure defined by placing mass +1 at each point m⩾nm \geqslant n. Show that the infimum of the decreasing sequence (μn)(\mu_n) in M+(X)\mathscr{M}_+(X) is 0, but that μn∗(X)=+∞\mu_n^*(X) = +\infty for all nn.
