Exercise 1, § 3

Integration, IV, p. 120

Let μ\mu be Lebesgue measure on the interval X=[0,1[X = [0, 1[ of R\mathbf{R}. For every integer n=2h+kn = 2^h + k (h⩾0,0⩽k<2hh \geqslant 0, 0 \leqslant k < 2^h) let fnf_n be the function equal to 1 on the interval [k/2h,(k+1)/2h[[k/2^h, (k+1)/2^h[ and to 0 elsewhere in XX. Show that the sequence (fn)(f_n) converges in mean of order pp to 0 for every p>0p > 0, but that the sequence (fn(x))(f_n(x)) does not converge for any point x∈Xx \in X.
