Integration, IV, p. 131

Let XX be a compact space, μ\mu a positive measure on XX, and (fn)(f_n) a sequence of μ\mu-measurable numerical functions. Show that the following properties are equivalent:

(i) there exists a subsequence (fnk)(f_{n_k}) of (fn)(f_n) tending to 0 almost everywhere in XX; (ii) there exists a sequence (λn)(\lambda_n) of finite real numbers such that

lim sup⁡n→∞∣λn∣>0 \limsup_{n \to \infty} |\lambda_n| > 0

and such that the series with general term λnfn(x)\lambda_n f_n(x) converges almost everywhere in XX;

(iii) there exists a sequence (λn)(\lambda_n) of finite real numbers such that

∑n=1∞∣λn∣=+∞ \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} |\lambda_n| = +\infty

and such that the series with general term λnfn(x)\lambda_n f_n(x) is absolutely convergent almost everywhere in XX.

(To see that (i) implies (ii) and (iii), make use of Egoroff’s theorem. To see that (iii) implies (i), show that (iii) implies the existence of an increasing sequence (Ak)(A_k) of measurable subsets of XX and a subsequence (fnk)(f_{n_k}) of (fn)(f_n), such that μ(Ak)\mu(A_k) tends to μ(X)\mu(X) and ∫∣fnkφAk∣dμ\int |f_{n_k} \varphi_{A_k}| d\mu tends to 0.)
