Exercise 21, § 5

Integration, IV, p. 131

Let XX be a locally compact space, μ\mu a positive measure on XX, and (Uα)α∈A(U_\alpha)_{\alpha \in A} an open covering of XX. For every α∈A\alpha \in A, let fαf_\alpha be a mapping of UαU_\alpha into a set GG. Assume that for every pair of indices α,β\alpha, \beta, the set of points x∈Uα∩Uβx \in U_\alpha \cap U_\beta such that fα(x)≠fβ(x)f_\alpha(x) \neq f_\beta(x) is locally μ\mu-negligible. Show that there exists a mapping ff of XX into GG such that, for every α∈A\alpha \in A, the set of x∈Uαx \in U_\alpha such that f(x)≠fα(x)f(x) \neq f_\alpha(x) is locally μ-negligible. (Consider first the case that X is compact, by covering X by a finite number of sets U_α; pass to the general case with the help of Prop. 14 of No. 9.)
