Bourbaki

Exercise 6, § 5

Integration, IV, p. 128

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

For every integer n⩾1n \geqslant 1, let fn(x)=[2nx]−2[2n−1x]f_n(x) = [2^n x] - 2[2^{n-1} x]. In the compact space of mappings of R\mathbf{R} into {0,1}\{0, 1\} (equipped with the topology of pointwise convergence), let ff be a cluster point of the sequence (fn)(f_n). Show that, for every dyadic number rr, f(r+x)=f(x)f(r + x) = f(x) for all x∈Rx \in \mathbf{R} and f(r−x)=1−f(x)f(r - x) = 1 - f(x) for every x∈Rx \in \mathbf{R} different from a dyadic number. From this, deduce that for the Lebesgue measure μ\mu, ff is not measurable. (Argue by contradiction; let AA be the set of x∈[0,1]x \in [0, 1] such that f(x)=1f(x) = 1, and suppose that AA is measurable and that μ(A)=α>0\mu(A) = \alpha > 0; show that there exists a set II, the finite union of open intervals contained in ]0,1[]0, 1[, such that μ(I∩∁A)⩽α/4\mu(I \cap \complement A) \leqslant \alpha/4 and μ(A∩∁I)⩽α/4\mu(A \cap \complement I) \leqslant \alpha/4; on considering the intervals contained in II and of the form ]k/2n,(k+1)/2n[]k/2^n, (k+1)/2^n[, show that one obtains a contradiction with the relation f(r−x)=1−f(x)f(r - x) = 1 - f(x) for rr dyadic and xx non-dyadic.)
