Exercise 11, § 6

Integration, IV, p. 137

Let gg be a numerical function ⩾0\geqslant 0 belonging to Lp\mathscr{L}^p (1⩽p<+∞1 \leqslant p < +\infty). Denote by IgI_g the set of functions f∈LFpf \in \mathscr{L}_F^p such that ∣f∣⩽g|f| \leqslant g.

a) Show that on IgI_g, the topology of convergence in mean of order pp is identical to the topology of convergence in measure.

b) If p⩽q<rp \leqslant q < r (resp. q<r⩽pq < r \leqslant p), show that on the set Ig∩LFq∩LFrI_g \cap \mathscr{L}_F^q \cap \mathscr{L}_F^r the topology of convergence in mean of order qq is coarser (resp. finer) than the topology of convergence in mean of order rr (for two functions f,f0f, f_0 belonging to this set, write ∣f−f0∣q⩽∣f−f0∣s(2g)q−s|f - f_0|^q \leqslant |f - f_0|^s (2g)^{q-s} and use Hölder’s inequality, suitably choosing ss and the pair of conjugate exponents). Show by means of examples that these topologies can be distinct (cf. Exer. 8).

c) Let μ\mu be Lebesgue measure on X=]0,+∞[X = ]0, +\infty[; the function

g(x)=(x(log⁡2x+1))−1/p g(x) = (x(\log^2 x + 1))^{-1/p}
belongs to Lp\mathscr{L}^p, but to no Lq\mathscr{L}^q for q≠pq \neq p. Show that if q≠pq \neq p, the topology of convergence in mean of order qq on the set Ig∩LqI_g \cap \mathscr{L}^q is distinct from the topology of convergence in measure.
