Exercise 17, § 6
Integration, IV, p. 139
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be Lebesgue measure on . One defines the sequence of step functions on by the following conditions: is the constant 1; for every integer , let be the largest integer such that , and write ; is the function equal to on the interval , to on the interval , and to 0 at the other points of .
a) Show that the sequence is orthonormal (the Haar orthonormal system).
b) Let be the linear subspace of (over ) generated by the with indices . Show that there exists a partition of into semi-open intervals such that, in each of these intervals, every function belonging to is constant. Deduce from this that, conversely, for every function that is constant on each of these intervals, there exists a function in that is equal to on (note that has dimension ).
c) Let be any function in ; deduce from b) that if is the unique function in for which is minimal, then, in every interval where is constant, one has .
d) Show that for every complex-valued function , defined and continuous on , the series with general term is uniformly convergent on and has sum (make use of c)). Deduce from this that the sequence is total.
