Integration, IV, p. 142

a) Let KK be a compact convex subset of a Hausdorff locally convex space EE, μ\mu a positive measure on KK of mass 1, bμb_\mu its barycenter. Show that for every positive function ff on KK that is concave and lower semi-continuous, one has f(bμ)≥∫∗fdμf(b_\mu) \geq \int^* f d\mu. (Note that ff is bounded (TVS, II, §2, Exer. 32), consequently −f-f is μ\mu-integrable.) From this, conclude that if ff is a lower semi-continuous (or upper semi-continuous) function on KK that is both convex and concave, then ∫fdμ=f(bμ)\int f d\mu = f(b_\mu).

b) Let II be the interval [0,1][0,1] of R\mathbf{R}, KK the subset of M+(I)\mathscr{M}_+(I) formed by the positive measures of total mass 1, which is convex and compact for the vague topology, and let j:x↦εxj : x \mapsto \varepsilon_x be the canonical injection of II into KK, which is a homeomorphism of II onto a subspace of KK. For every measure ν∈K\nu \in K, set g(ν)=∑x∈Iν({x})g(\nu) = \sum_{x \in I} \nu(\{x\}); this is a function that is both convex and concave in KK; moreover, if gn(ν)g_n(\nu) is the supremum of the ν(A)\nu(A) for all the finite subsets AA of II having at most nn elements, then gng_n is upper semi-continuous on KK, and g(ν)=lim⁡n→∞gn(ν)g(\nu) = \lim_{n \to \infty} g_n(\nu) for every ν∈K\nu \in K, therefore gg is λ\lambda-integrable for every measure λ\lambda on KK. Let μ\mu be the measure on KK such that ∫fdμ=∫If(j(x))dx\int f d\mu = \int_I f(j(x)) dx for f∈K(X;R)f \in \mathscr{K}(X; \mathbf{R}), which is positive and of total mass 1; show that bμb_\mu is Lebesgue measure on II and that ∫gdμ≠g(bμ)\int g d\mu \neq g(b_\mu).
