Integration, IV, p. 142
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let X be a compact space, P a set of lower semi-continuous numerical functions on X, taking values in ]−∞,+∞]. Assume that P contains the finite constants; for every function h∈P and every positive measure μ on X, μ∗(h) is defined and >−∞ (§4, Exer. 5).
a) For two positive measures μ,ν on X, write μ≺ν if μ∗(h)≤ν∗(h) for every function h∈P. Show that the relation μ≺ν is a pre-order relation on M+(X); it implies that μ(1)=ν(1), cμ≺cν for all c>0, and μ+λ≺ν+λ for every measure λ∈M+(X).
b) Assume that P+P⊂P and that c⋅P⊂P for c>0. Let μ be a positive measure on X, f a function in C(X;R). Denote by Qf the set of functions h≥f belonging to P, and by Mμ the set of measures λ∈M+(X) such that λ≺μ. Show that
λ∈Mμsupλ(f)=h∈Qfinfμ∗(h).
(For every function g∈C(X;R), let p(g)=infh∈Qgμ∗(h). Show that p(g+g′)≤p(g)+p(g′) and p(cg)=c⋅p(g) for g,g′ in C(X;R) and c>0; prove on the other hand that Mμ is identical to the set of measures λ∈M+(X) such that, for every function g∈C(X;R), one has λ(g)≤p(g), and conclude by applying the Hahn-Banach theorem.) If the functions in P are continuous and if S0(f) is the lower envelope of Qf, then also μ(S0(f))=supλ∈Mμλ(f).
c) If the set P0 of functions in P that are continuous and finite on X is total in C(X;R), then the relation μ≺ν is an order relation on M+(X). If a measure ν∈M+(X) is maximal for this order relation, then so is every measure ν′ such that 0⩽ν′⩽ν (for the usual order) (argue by contradiction using a)). If P0=P and P is total, then every increasing directed set for the order relation μ≺ν admits a supremum in M+(X) for this relation; in particular, M+(X) is inductive for this relation.
d) Suppose that the functions in P are continuous and finite, that P is total in C(X;R), and that P+P⊂P and c⋅P⊂P for all c>0. For every function f∈C(X;R), denote by S(f) the lower envelope of the functions h∈−P such that f⩽h; for every ε>0, denote by Kf,ε the set of x∈X such that S(f)(x)⩾f(x)+ε. Show that the following conditions are equivalent: α) The measure μ∈M+(X) is maximal for the order relation λ≺λ′. β) For every function f∈C(X;R), μ(S(f))=μ(f). β') For every function f∈P, μ(S(f))=μ(f). γ) For every function f∈C(X;R) and every ε>0, μ(Kf,ε)=0. γ') For every function f∈P and every ε>0, μ(Kf,ε)=0. (Apply b) to −P.)
e) Under the hypotheses of d), show that if μ and μ′ are two positive measures on X that are maximal for the relation ≺, then so is μ+μ′. From this, deduce that the set of positive measures that are maximal for this order relation is a lattice for the usual order relation ⩽.
